Casablanca – Marrakech

By 8 a.m. you’ll have cleared your room, suitcase in hand. Let the winding alleys of the medina draw you first as the sun angles over the colored ceramics piled in the souks. Move toward the melody of beating drums that announces the ever-lively Jemaa El Fna, a square that wears its labor of storytelling long into the night. From the square you’ll spot the iconic Koutoubia Mosque, its slender minaret a natural compass for wandering feet. Its shadow keeps watch on the hundreds of selfies snapped in its vicinity. After, let the opulent thresholds of the Bahia Palace enfold you; the courtyards breathe the faded romance of 19th-century craftsmanship—as echoing of Spanish, as of Moorish heart. Next, flee the bustle in the tranquil gardens of Menara, the emerald olive grove under the raucous blue sky. Its reflective basin waits for the next ripple the breeze sets free. The guided day’s end will find you in a riad, candlelight flickering against mosaic, the scent of tagine stitching day to night.

Marrakech – Ouarzazate – Zagoura

Later, after breakfast, ride out early over the High Atlas via the Tichka Pass, a twisting ribbon of road that serves up jaw-dropping peaks, wide-until-the-eye-can’t-see vistas, and the flavors of incense-dry, high-altitude air. Wind south to Ouarzazate, where a grilled lunch and a wandering of the Taourirt Kasbah’s mud brick ramparts refuels you. Continue over the Tinififft, a low key yet jaw-dropping crest of the Atlas, then plunge into the Draa Valley and chemin to the roadless town of Zagora, lofty at 1,660 meters. You’ll dip into the girding expanse of the Sahara itself just as the sun crabs orange and begins to slip: at that golden moment you stride a dromedary, the camel’s soft footfalls muted in wind-slop every grain, then you ascend onto the Erg Lihoudi where the dune-ridges smoulder and soft wax-blend. After the full-scale bow of crimson light, supper in a silent desert encampment where a Berber tent waits, the night filling up with singing desert watches and the clear whispers of stars.

Zagora – Ouarzazate – Ait ben hadou – Marrakech

Wake with the sun to catch morning light painting the dunes, have a leisurely breakfast, then drive to Tamgroute, famous for its ancient Koranic school, a small but priceless library, and buzzing pottery workshops.meander along the palm grooves and fragrant henna fields lining the Draa Valley, scent of sun-warmed soil around you. Shortly, the Anti-Atlas comes back into view and you start the winding ascent. Come noon, you pull into Ait Benhaddou, have a platter of tagine for lunch, then explore the earthen-bermed old Ksar, where movie sets and adobe walls upwards of a thousand years old sit shoulder to shoulder. Back on the road, you glide along the pastel ribbon of the Ounila Valley, also known as the Salt Valley for the gleaming ponds that matched the white peaks of the mountains, and sweep into the High Atlas with peaks spearing sky. The sun sets, road snakes through the plaine crests and descents, to you to clock, clock among the rose-colored glows of the kasbahs and telephone towers, tower to the plate borders of Marrakech, Stea to the casbah you food and the cushion of the sweet lane.
